In a study conducted by the American Heart Association, on 5,200 adults, those who owned dogs were 54% more likely to get the recommended level of exercise as well as being active, than the non-dog owners. The American Heart Association reviewed further research and studies, and were happy to announce that those who own a dog or a cat are much more likely to have a lower risk of heart disease.
The mere act of walking dogs regularly helps fight obesity. Furthermore, the companionship built between pets and their owners, helps boost hormones that fight stress, helps coping mechanisms be stronger during stressful circumstances, and therefore lessens strain on the heart.
The Center For Disease Control & Prevention does wish to clarify that pets are not the magic wands for heart health and fighting obesity, but rather, what it’s what you do with those pets that makes all the difference. Lastly, your dog and your heart will thank you if you can walk your dog more often!
