Dr. John Burns is in private practice with the renowned internationally respected group of plastic surgeons at The Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute and is well trained in all aspects of plastic and cosmetic surgery. His goal is to create natural beauty without making a person appear unnatural or “fake.” He believes that a person’s natural beauty should be enhanced, not altered. Dr. Burns believes in achieving the finest possible result with the least risk. He insists on using only physician anesthesiologists and operates in an onsite and fully accredited surgery center, the Dallas Day Surgery Center, or at Baylor University Medical Center. As the first plastic surgeon in the United States to complete a fellowship in laser surgery, Dr. John Burns brings a unique and unmatched expertise in facial rejuvenation.

Dr. Burns is a Clinical Instructor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and is in private practice with a renowned group of plastic surgeons at The Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute. Dr. Burns was raised in Dallas and graduated from Highland Park High School. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dr. Burns completed his medical training at the University of Texas Medical Branch graduating summa cum laude from the research honors program. As one of the top students, he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honorary society. He stayed at the University of Texas Medical Branch where he completed a residency in Plastic Surgery. In addition, he completed training in microvascular surgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas and cosmetic surgery in Miami, Florida. Dr. Burns completed a fellowship in laser surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. His leadership in the field is evidenced by the numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters he has published on the subject of plastic and laser surgery. Dr. Burns is a frequent speaker at national meetings and is active in clinical research studies focusing on new laser technology.

Dr. Burns’ philosophy is to achieve the finest possible result with the least risk. This is why Dr. Burns insists on using only physician anesthesiologists for all but the most simple of procedures. Dr. Burns operates only in fully accredited facilities such as his surgery center, Dallas Day Surgery Center, Baylor University Medical Center, and Medical City Hospital. In addition to his adult cosmetic surgery practice, Dr. Burns has a large pediatric plastic surgery practice, Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery for Infants and Children, at Medical City Children’s Hospital where he treats children with vascular birthmarks, tumors, and hemangiomas.

Cosmetic surgery is primarily out of pocket and not covered by health insurance.  However, breast reconstruction after breast cancer is usually covered. Eyelid surgery is sometimes covered if the patient can prove their eyelids are impairing their vision.  Hand-related cases are usually covered. Craniofacial Surgery for infants and children, vascular birthmarks, tumors, and hemangiomas, is usually covered.
