How To Find Your Bariatric Surgeon

How To Find Your Bariatric Surgeon

We’ve asked Dallas General and Bariatric Surgeon Dr. Michael Sutker to put together a short list of keys to finding the perfect bariatric surgeon. Straight from the surgeon himself, here’s how to make your life easier.

Decide which type of surgery you may be interested in.

I offer a wide range of primary bariatric surgeries: sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, duodenal switch. I also offer revisional surgeries: band-to-sleeve, band-to-bypass, sleeve to bypass, sleeve to switch, bypass to switch, VBG to the band, VBG to bypass. I offer the Obalon gastric balloon. If you are not interested in surgery, I also offer medical weight loss and medication.

Consider the surgeon’s background and experience.

michael-sutker-md-bariatric-surgeonI trained at two prestigious universities – the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UT-Southwestern) for my general surgery training and the University of California-San Francisco (UCSF) for my specialty training in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery. I am board certified in general surgery. I have obtained board certification in Obesity Medicine. I am a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (FASMBS). I have 6 years of experience in private practice dealing with a wide range of patients with obesity; those who come for weight loss surgery and those who come with other surgical problems, such as gallbladder disease and hernias

Consider the facility at which the procedures are being performed.

The vast majority of my procedures are performed at Medical City Dallas Hospital, which is an MBSAQIP-certified center. This means that the facility has achieved certain benchmarks in terms of volume and safety. Due to my experience, I am also helping establish a program at michael-sutker-md-bariatric-surgeonMedical City McKinney and achieve the same certification in the near future.

Consider additional services offered.

My practice employs a full-time bariatric coordinator that will help manage you through all steps in the process. We work closely with several nutritionists who have vast experience in managing patients with obesity both before and after surgery. We work closely with mental health professionals and physical therapists to provide well-rounded multi-dimensional support to patients. Soon, my practice will also be offering bariatric vitamins directly to patients, so that you do not need to shop around to ensure you are getting the appropriate nutrients that you need.

Establish a long-lasting relationship with the surgeon and the practice.

I pride myself on offering life-long care to my patients after they have had surgery. My patients are seen in the office at least twice prior to surgery, once to attend an orientation presentation reviewing the reasoning behind surgery and then to obtain a history and physical exam and to order testing. The second appointment occurs after all testing is complete and is designed to schedule a date for surgery and answer any additional questions or concerns. I see all patients back in the office at 2 weeks and 6 weeks after surgery for routine post-operative visits. I then see patients for maintenance visits at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months during the first year, at 18 and 24 months during the second year, and every year thereafter. Patients are always welcome to come in more frequently as needed if there are any issues, questions, or concerns. I will communicate with the primary care physicians to ensure all providers are up-to-date with the plans.
