Face Lift

A facelift can drastically improve the look of your skin and make you look years younger. To understand how let’s look at the workings of your skin. The dermis or lower layer of your skin contains elastin and collagen proteins that give your skin resilience, bounce, and durability.

After years of sun exposure and damage caused by age, your skin loses it’s elasticity and volume which consequently causes wrinkles and droopy skin. Eventually, as you age you lose the collagen and elastin proteins, you need to keep your skin youthful and taught.

Nothing can stop the aging process, but one of the most effective ways to combat sagging skin in the face and neck, wrinkles at the corners of your eyes, “howling” at the jawline, “marionette lines” or your double chin is a rhytidectomy, commonly known as a facelift.

A facelift works by surgically removing excess skin and tightening underlying tissues. Since everyone’s face is different, not two facelift procedures are exactly alike.

The Facelift Procedure

Most facelift procedures are performed under local anesthesia.

A traditional facelift requires an incision from your temple area and curves around the earlobe to the bottom hairline. If the skin of your neck needs to be tightened a small incision under the chin is made.

Your surgeon will separate the fat and muscle from your skin to get at the underlying tissue. The tissue is tightened by folding and pulling it under itself. In some cases, liposuction may be used to remove any excess fatty areas.

The tightening of this underlying tissue firms up the cheeks, jaw, and neck. Once all of the muscle and tissue has been repositioned and tighten your surgeon will pull up your skin and trim off the excess skin before stitching you up. The main incisions are hidden behind the hairline or under the chin.

A facelift doesn’t address everything, though, for example, it doesn’t correct sagging eyelids, droopy eyebrows or the texture of your skin.

Most people who get a facelift have additional plastic surgery procedures performed at the same time, including eyelid surgery, a brow lift, and skin rejuvenation procedures like chemical peels or microdermabrasion.
