COSMETIC | PLASTIC SURGERY
A breast lift procedure or a mastopexy is a common procedure performed. In fact, breast lift surgery is one of the top 10 cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Why Do Breasts Sag?
There are several reasons your breasts may sag, the number one culprit being gravity. No other part of your body feels the effects of gravity like your breasts. The larger your breasts are, the more likely they are to succumb to gravity’s constant pressure. Other contributing factors include your weight, family history, age, skin elasticity and pregnancy/breastfeeding.
Talk to any mother and they will tell you, there’s nothing more rewarding than giving birth to a child. And if you are a health-conscience mom you are going to breastfeed your baby due to the vast benefits of breastfeeding that extend beyond basic nutrition. Most moms breastfeed anywhere between 1-2 years to help get their little ones off to a good healthy start. While pregnancy and breastfeeding are both beautiful and natural, they both take a toll on your boobs. The more pregnancies you have, the more likely your breasts are to become saggy or deflated.
Even though ptosis of the breast is a natural occurrence, it can have a profound impact on the way you view your body. Many women start to feel self-conscience about their breasts. They no longer feel attractive in their skin. This can start to affect your sex life and put a strain on your relationship.
If you don’t feel good about the way your breasts look, and it is starting to have a negative impact on your relationship and self-image, a breast lift can make a world of difference.
A Breast Lift Doesn’t Add Volume To Breasts
Contrary to what you may think, a breast lift will only correct sagging of the breast to lift them to a more natural position. It will not make them bigger if they have lost volume. That is why so many women opt to get breast augmentation and breast lift surgery done at the same time.
A breast lift is the only procedure out there to help counter the effects of gravity on your breasts. A top-notch surgeon will be able to restore your breasts to their former selves so you can feel good about the way you look.
Breast Lift Procedure
Depending on how much skin and tissue needs to be removed will determine the size of your incision. The incision may only be around the nipple area (donut shaped incision), it may include a vertical incision below the nipple (lollipop shaped incisions) or a horizontal incision (anchor shaped incision) in the crease below the breast.
Once the breasts are lifted and reshaped, the incisions are closed up. You may be able to see some scarring of the incisions lines, but most will be concealed by the natural contour of your breast. The good news, most breast lift incision lines will fade and improve over time.
Sometimes breast shape can only be enhanced by the insertion of an implant under the muscle of the breast. Although a Mastopexy does leave scars on the breasts, breast shape should be markedly improved.
The operation can be done at an out-patient surgery center, usually under general anesthesia, occasionally under local anesthesia with sedation. It takes between one and three hours. Depending on the extent of the procedure
The recovery period depends on the extent of the procedure, but patients should be able to return to work within 3-7 days. Sutures do not need to be removed as these will dissolve of their accord. Heavy physical contact with the breasts may be painful for up to a month following the operation. The scars should fade after several months.
Your surgeon will then close the incisions using surgical tapes and adhesives and sutures deep within the breast tissue.
