Abdominoplasty | Tummy Tuck

Men and women alike, have stubborn abdominal fat.  We may be perfectly proportionate with a normal weight, fit and perfectly healthy but our abdominal areas may still be lacking.

Cosmetic-Plastic surgery can remove stubborn abdominal fat deposits to reveal the smooth surfaces underneath.  People looking to improve the appearance of their abdominal areas have several choices.  Meet with your surgeon to discuss which option is best for you.  The best choice may be a type of liposuction or it may be something more along the lines of a “tummy tuck .”

Tummy Tuck – The procedure

An abdominoplasty involves removal of unwanted fatty deposits along with the removal of excess skin.  Some patients may have weak or separated abdominal muscles.  This is fairly common after pregnancy.  Abdominoplasties repair weak and separated abs to restore your pre-pregnancy appearance.  Abdominoplasties can also help people whose tummies protrude for other reasons.  Some patients, for example, develop bulky tummies because of weight changes, other surgeries, age, or for genetic reasons.   Many others get an abdominoplasty after they have gone through a major weight loss.  Abdominoplasty is a common procedure for people who have had gastric surgery such as a lap band, gastric sleeve or gastric bypass.  They are designed to get rid of any sagging skin that might remain.  To be a good candidate for an abdominoplasty should be in good health, stable weight and be a non-smoker.  If you are planning to become pregnant you should wait and have your tummy tuck once you are finished having babies.

Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty?

In order to be a good candidate for an abdominoplasty, you should be in good general health and have a stable weight.  Stable weight is important in order to preserve the long-lasting or permanent effects of your cosmetic surgery.  Large weight gains or losses can cause the skin to sag.  You must not be a smoker.  If you are considering a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty and you are a smoker you should quit smoking.  If you are having trouble quitting smoking, ask your doctor for help.  You should also have realistic expectations for results.  Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss these with you during your initial visit.

What is an Abdominoplasty like?

Your cosmetic surgeon will first provide you with anesthesia.  Once you are under sedation your surgeon will make an incision between the top of your pubic bone and your navel.  Your surgeon will make any needed repairs to your abdominal muscles through this incision.  He or she will also be able to remove any unwanted fat deposits.  Your surgeon may also make a crosswise incision across your lower abdomen.  Excess skin is usually removed or “tucked” using the horizontal incision. Once your surgeon has completed the removal of unwanted fat and/or repair your abdominal muscles your incisions will be closed with sutures or adhesives.
