The Process of Getting Braces Put On
First, your doctor will take x-ray pictures of your teeth and molds of your teeth. Then, brackets are bonded onto the front of the teeth, which hold the wire going around the upper mouth and the lower mouth. Tiny elastic bands are placed on top of the brackets to hold the wires in place. Orthodontic bands are placed on the back molar teeth through dental bonding and provide an anchor for the brackets.
If the bite needs to be corrected, headgear may need to be used. This includes a horseshoe shaped retainer going inside the mouth in the upper roof of the mouth. A strap can be connected to it that leads outside of the mouth and connects to a head strap. This is usually worn at night when you are sleeping.
How Long Will I Have To Wear Braces?
Depending on your teeth and bite needs, this time fluctuates. You will see the orthodontist about once a month to make sure they are working and moving the way they are supposed to. Your orthodontist will make adjustments to the wire-pressure to achieve that beautiful smile your looking for.
Will They Be Painful?
Some adjustments made to the braces may feel tight, initially, and Motrin or Tylenol will help.
Does My Age Affect the Success of Braces?
Although the process stays the same between adults and children, there are some changes in the process for adults. Because adult’s bones are harder, it may take longer for the changes and adjustments to occur.
When The Braces Are Taken Off
Your orthodontist will thoroughly clean your teeth after the braces are removed, and another set of x-rays will be taken. Also, another set of impressions will be taken. Special note will be taken if you have wisdom teeth coming in, and your orthodontist may recommend you make an appointment to have them removed, as they can push your straightened teeth out of place.
Your orthodontist will also fit you for retainers to wear, in order to keep your teeth straight. These should be worn every night. These are made of clear plastic.
