There is always a small amount of yeast that resides in the vagina. It’s normal. But when the fungus grows out of control it is called a yeast infection. Yeast infections are very common, in fact, most women will have one at some point in their life. If you’ve had one before then you know yeast infection can be quite uncomfortable and often times hard to get under control.
What Causes a Yeast Infection?
There are several things that can trigger an abnormal growth of yeast in your vagina, including:
- Birth Control Pills
- Drinking or eating lots of sugary foods
- Hormonal changes
- Lack of sleep
Symptoms of a Yeast Infection
- Abnormal white, chunky discharge that has kinda looks like cottage cheese
- A bad odor with a “bready” smell
- Discomfort during urination
- Irritation, itching, and soreness of the vagina and/or vulva
- Painful intercourse
There are over-the-counter remedies for yeast infections, but symptoms can easily be misdiagnosed at home. Plus, if you have a particularly stubborn yeast infection over-the-counter cures will not help. And DIY treatments are not completely reliable.
Many vaginal infections have similar symptoms, like bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, and dermatitis to name a few. If you use an over-the-counter anti-fungal cream and you don’t actually have a yeast infection it can disrupt the naturally occurring yeast in your vagina and any remaining yeast will come back stronger and more drug-resistant.
If you suspect you have a yeast infection, your best bet is to visit your Gynecologist for proper diagnosis and treatment. If after a pelvic examination your gynecologist determines you do indeed have a yeast infection it can be easily treated with prescription-strength anti-fungal creams, ointments, tablets, suppositories or oral medication and you can be free of the infection and symptoms!
