Nutrition is of the utmost importance for your health. They say you are what you eat and that is very true. If you put fat into your body, you will gain fat. If you put fruits and vegetables in your body, you will gain nutrients. Due to our heredity, we are naturally more susceptible to certain diseases. It is something we cannot help, but eating properly can change all of that. People think that being “skinny” means you are healthy, and that is not true at all. Even those who are at a good weight can have all types of health conditions. If you are unsure about your nutrition and health, you should take note and get on track.

What Is Nutrition?

Nutrition is providing your body with the food necessary for growth and health. You can put unhealthy foods in your body and still grow, but you may not grow the way you want to. On the opposite end of things not eating at all is also bad. You cannot grow or be healthy when you do not feed yourself. Your body cannot function without food. This is where a lot of people mess up. They think not eating will help them lose weight when in fact eating more is what you need to do. If you eat only one meal a day and it’s full of carbs and starch, you are only hurting yourself. You may consume fewer calories, but those carbs turn to sugar which in the end turns into fat. There are some guidelines you need to follow to stay healthy.

When it comes to nutrition, you should be open to trying new things. Eating only one type of fruit or vegetable is okay, but you are not getting the full benefits. Some vegetables are high in Zinc whereas others are high in Iron. Eating a variety will provide you with all the nutrition you need. People think you have to take carbs out of your diet completely to be healthy. That is not true. Your body needs carbs because carbs feed the brain. The problem is the type of carbs we put into our body. Sticking to whole grain foods is important. Many people are developing gluten allergies. Gluten is found in many of the grains we eat. Eating whole grain and gluten-free helps us feel better.

You also do not have to be a vegetarian to be healthy. Eating meat is fine, but you should choose lean meat. Pork may taste good, but it is not the best type of meat. Lean ground beef is better if you like red meat. Chicken is even better for you. Baked chicken adds protein to your diet without all the extra fat. Fish is good for you and provides you with other nutrients you cannot get from anything else. The fish you choose is very important. Shrimp and catfish are one of the worst types of fish you can eat. Contrary to popular belief, tilapia is not all that good for you either. Salmon, sardines, and cod are the best fish you can eat. The Omega-3 in these types of fish are very high. Omega-3 helps support brain health. It is best to limit sugars and fats in the diet. You do need sugar and fat to be healthy, but you need good sugars and fats. Cakes and pies are a no-no. You can get a lot of sugar from fruit. Instead of ice cream, you should try yogurt or fruit pops. It is all about substitution. The best thing you can ever do for yourself is drink water. The body is 75% water and most of the health problems we have, are related to a lack of water.

What Do Good Nutrients Do?

Nutrition has a direct effect on our health. When we eat right, we will be healthy overall. The way we eat can have an effect on our appearance and energy level. Feeding your body the right type of energy will help you get through the day without that cup of coffee. If you struggle with acne, drinking enough water can completely cure that up. Good nutrition can help you avoid all types of diseases, even cancer. Bad nutrition has been related to diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Your nutrition can even trigger diseases like arthritis. Some foods create inflammatory responses in your body which are not good. Research has been done linking the way you eat to cancer. Some doctors are even using nutrition to help fight cancer.

Nutrition is something we have to get educated on. Understanding how nutrition affects our health will increase our awareness. Sometimes it is the small things that make the biggest difference. It may be hard to change everything in your diet all at once, but you have to start somewhere. Drinking more water is the first step. Just exchanging those sodas and sugary drinks with water will not only better your health but also help you lose weight.
