Low Testosterone

Testosterone is a hormone secreted primarily from the testicles of males and the ovaries of females. Small amounts of testosterone, secreted by the adrenal glands, are part of a class of male hormones called androgens. The production is controlled by the brain’s hypothalamus and the pituitary gland.

Testosterone is the principal male sex hormone and an anabolic steroid. Testosterone is necessary for sexual and reproductive development in both men and women, though women are at much lower levels than men.

With men, testosterone plays a key role in the development of male reproductive tissues as well as promoting sexual characteristics such as muscle and bone mass and the growth of body hair.

Testosterone is essential for our feeling of well-being. If you are feeling like a couch potato, there is a possibility you are suffering from Low Testosterone (Hypogonadism) or LowT. LowT affects approximately 39% of men over the age of 45; this increases with every year that slips by.

Signs of Low Testosterone or LowT

  • Decreased energy
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Increased body fat
  • Low libido – desire for sex
  • Poor erectile function
  • Reduced muscle mass
  • Reduced sexual activity
  • Weaker and fewer erections

Interestingly, 40% of men with high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels will have low testosterone levels. Approximately 50% of men with diabetes, and who are obese, will have low-testosterone.

Benefits of Testosterone Replacement Therapy

If you are feeling like you may be suffering from LowT maybe it’s about time you get tested? Testosterone replacement therapy has shown to improve:

  • Decrease body fat
  • Decrease risk of bone fractures
  • Improve erections
  • Improve sleep
  • Increase bone mineral density
  • Increase energy levels
  • Increase libido – sex drive

Treatment Options For Low T

A blood test diagnoses low testosterone. Your doctor will also check your PSA for a prostate screening and your hematocrit levels. Once you have been diagnosed with LowT, your doctor will prescribe either injections, skin gel, acting pellets, patches or oral inserts. Most doctors begin with the gel. If you do not respond quickly enough, they will prescribe injections.

If you are feeling depressed, low energy and suffering from a low sex drive it’s time to get tested.
