Osteoporosis 2018-02-02T12:07:11-06:00

Osteoporosis is a condition where the bones become brittle and weak and are easily prone to fracturing.  So how does it occur? Because bone is made out of living tissue, it is necessary for the bone tissue to be absorbed by the body and replaced with new bone tissue. Osteoporosis can occur when the bone is not able to create new tissue as quickly as the bone can get rid of old tissue, therefore leading to brittle bones and fractures.  These fractures most commonly occur in the hips, spine, and wrists and can even result from someone coughing or bending over.

Who is Affected?

Although osteoporosis affects both men and women in a broad age range, some people are specifically more susceptible than others. Specifically, women, both white and Asian, who have already gone through menopause, are most vulnerable.  Certain factors that can help prevent osteoporosis are having a healthy diet, weight training exercises, and certain medications.

  • Stooped posture
  • Back pain
  • Getting shorter over time
  • A fractured bone that happens more quickly than expected

When to See A Doctor

For some people, if they went through menopause earlier than usual, it may not be a bad idea to have your bone density checked. Also, if you have a family history of hip fractures, or had to take corticosteroids for several months, there are other reasons to see a doctor for potential osteoporosis.
