Breast Cancer: When There is Not a Lump

The most well-known symptom of breast cancer is a new lump or mass in the breast. Sometimes the mass is painless and hard with irregular edges, but sometimes they feel soft and rounded. Some may even be painful. But what if there isn’t a lump? What should women be looking for besides an unwelcome knot in their knockers?

According to the American Cancer Society, any of the following unusual changes in the breast can be a symptom of breast cancer:

  • A lump in the underarm area
  • Breast pain
  • Change in the size or the shape of the breast
  • Nipple discharge
  • Nipple pain
  • Nipple retraction (turning inward)
  • Redness or thickening of the nipple or breast skin
  • Skin irritation and dimpling
  • Swelling of all or part of the breast

Keep in mind that some of these warning signs can happen with less severe conditions that are not cancerous, such as an infection or a cyst. It’s important to get any breast changes checked out promptly by a doctor.

Sometimes breast cancer can spread to lymph nodes under the arm or around the collar bone and cause a lump or swelling there, even before the original tumor in the breast tissue is large enough to be felt. Swollen lymph nodes should report to your doctor.

Different people have different warning signs of breast cancer. Some people do not have any signs or symptoms at all. A person may find out they have breast cancer after a routine mammogram.

Understanding that breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, with one out of eight women in the United States being diagnosed at some point in their lives it is essential to staying aware of your body. Don’t talk yourself out of a symptom or assume it could not happen to you. Any signs or symptoms are always well worth a visit to your doctor. It could save your life.

If you have not had a mammogram by the time you hit the big 50, it’s time.
