Are You Making Your Allergies Worse?

Year-round allergies can be caused by dust and dust mites, and mold, whereas, seasonal allergies can be caused by pollen, grass and weeds, and mold spores from trees.

Beyond the typical over-the-counter medicines such as antihistamines and decongestants, there are some additional steps you can take to help your allergies.

Laundry Specifics

Hot water helps kill indoor allergens as well as dust mites. While an estimated 70% of people with allergies, react to dust mites, one of the best ways to kill them is to wash sheets in very hot water around 140 degrees. Note that the warm water setting on a washing machine is around 100 degrees. Another thing to avoid is hanging clothes, sheets, and towels outside to dry. This can merely attract more pollen from the outdoors and have an adverse effect.

Shower More Often

Allergens from pollen in the air come from grass, weeds, and trees. Because of this, allergens can stick to your clothes, be on your car door handle, and stick to your skin and hair. Therefore, a great countermeasure to take is to shower immediately after work or spending extended time outdoors. If you do this, you are helping to prevent pollen from coming into your home.

 Watch What You Drink

In actuality, there are histamines in wine, beer, and spirits produced from the yeast and bacteria during the fermentation process. Another issue is the sulfites in beer and wine that can spark allergy symptoms.

Take Your Medications At A Strategic Time

It can be very effective to take antihistamine medicine before seasonal allergies arrive. Furthermore, always take your medicine at night, just before going to bed. This way, the drugs have time to enter your bloodstream and be more effective by the time you wake up. One last step is to avoid “non-drowsy” medication at night, because it may make it harder to sleep.

Lower Your Stress

Lastly, stress plays an additional role in causing allergy symptoms to stay longer and be more severe. If at all possible, try to avoid allowing you to get elevated in the midst of stressful situations and allow time for you to take a break and have a cup of tea. This will help your allergies to go away sooner rather than later!
