Dr. William Robertson who serves as the Chief of UT Southwestern Sports Medicine & Shoulder Service, brings a unique focus to helping all ages, levels, and types of athletes and active adults. He specializes in evaluating and treating shoulder, hip, knee, and other sports-related injuries and conditions. Dr. Robertson is the head team physician for the National Hockey League’s Dallas Stars, along with a variety of other sports teams in North Texas. As a former All-Ivy League linebacker, he knows first-hand what a crushing injury can do to an athlete’s body and how the right diagnosis and treatment can affect long-term performance.

His expertise includes the latest surgical and nonsurgical advancements to alleviate pain and restore function – offering innovative arthroscopic surgery to treat shoulder, hip, and knee disorders, as well as open surgical management procedures. This ranges from the latest minimally invasive surgery for rotator cuff tears to shoulder Latarjet procedures to complex ACL reconstruction. Dr. Robertson is among a handful of orthopaedic surgeons in the country skilled in groundbreaking arthroscopic hip surgery, which can be performed on an outpatient basis and results in shorter recovery times for patients.

He completed fellowship training in shoulder reconstruction and sports medicine at Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Robertson completed his residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, which U.S. News & World Report ranks as the number one hospital in the country for orthopaedic surgery.
