Dr. Gilliland was born in Dallas, Texas and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. After pursuing an undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Baylor University, he attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He graduated at the top of his class and became a member of Alpha Omega Alpha – Honor Medical Society. His training continued at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas in an Internal Medicine internship followed by an Ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Gilliland then completed a fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center where he was voted as the best teaching faculty member. He is presently board certified in Ophthalmology.
Currently, Dr. Gilliland is an Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and an attending physician at Baylor Medical Center. In addition, he is director of Orbital Surgery for the Skull Based Surgery Institute at Baylor University Medical Center. He is also on staff at several other local hospitals. Dr. Gilliland is one of the team physicians for the DALLAS STARS NHL hockey team and has been a team physician for the DALLAS MAVERICKS NBA basketball team. Dr. Gilliland has been a ring side physician for the Real Estate Council’s FIGHT NIGHT and the Petroleum Club’s FIGHT NIGHT charity events for the last 5-7 years. Furthermore, Dr. Gilliland is one of the specialist physicians for the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) and is frequently called on to reconstruct rodeo cowboys. Because of the extensive experience, he has gained in Sports Ophthalmology, Dr. Gilliland is recognized as a leader in Sports related Ophthalmic Injuries. Dr. Gilliland is actively engaged in teaching resident doctors in Ophthalmology, Maxillofacial surgery, and several other specialties at Baylor Medical Center and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
Dr. Gilliland has published numerous articles in leading medical journals and written chapters on several different topics in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in several leading medical textbooks and online reference journals. In addition, he has engaged in clinical and basic science research relating to orbital fractures and wound strength – publishing a landmark article on the subject. With various medical technology companies, he has pioneered a new surgical treatment for Grave’s disease and has published his results in a peer reviewed journal. In addition, he holds a patent on a novel medical device to improve ocular safety during surgery. He has been invited to lecture on various topics in Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery across the country and abroad.
