Brain Attack

Stroke md top10mdStrokes are the third leading cause of death in the United States. A stroke is similar to a heart attack, but it is a lack of blood to the brain instead of to the heart. The brain needs both blood and oxygen to function properly. Our brains control our actions, the way we think and even speaking. If the brain is not healthy, our whole body will be affected. Strokes are extremely common, but people do not take note of the symptoms beforehand. If you notice you are having a stroke, you should seek medical attention immediately. If you are diagnosed with stroke, you can be treated without adverse complications.

Cause

The brain is the pilot of the body. It controls everything from heart rate to speech, to our thinking patterns. If our brains do not function properly, our bodies will not function well either. Lack of oxygen to the brain causes a lot of problems. If you lose too much oxygen during a stroke, you can have brain damage. Concussions and other brain injuries are dangerous because it affects your memory and ability to function. A stroke happens because the carotid artery gets blocked. The carotid artery carries blood to the brain. If the artery is clogged or blocked, the blood gets stuck, and the brain loses not only blood but oxygen as well. There are many causes of stroke and knowing these causes can help you prevent one.

As you know, stroke is caused by a lack of blood to the brain. Several things cause the blockage of blood. The first cause is a clogged artery. Cholesterol builds up in the artery causing carotid artery disease. A poor diet is the main source of this problem. This type of stroke is called an ischemic stroke. Ischemic stroke is the most common type of stroke. These strokes can be divided into two categories: embolic and thrombotic. They are both results of blockage in the bloodstream, but they differ in the location of the blockage. Embolic strokes happen when pieces of debris or a blood clot breaks off and gets stuck in the veins of the brain. A thrombotic stroke happens when a blockage occurs in the carotid artery that supplies the brain with oxygen.

The second cause of stroke is the leak or bursting of a blood vessel. You could also call this an aneurysm. If the blood vessel leaks or burst, blood cannot get to the brain. This also disrupts oxygen to the brain. This type of stroke is called a hemorrhagic stroke. These strokes are either intracerebral or subarachnoid. Intracerebral hemorrhages happen when a blood vessel inside the brain burst. Once it burst, it spills into the surrounding tissue of the brain and damages the brain cells. This is a very serious problem. Subarachnoid hemorrhages occur when there is a burst in an artery on or close to the brian. Brain cells are damaged, not because of blood spillage, but because of the widening and narrowing of blood vessels at a quick rate.

The third cause of stroke is a temporary condition. The blood flow to the brain is only temporarily disrupted and returns to normal. This type of stroke is called transient ischemic attack or TIA. It is a mild stroke and not as serious as the other ones. It is still a result of either debris or a blood clot blocking blood flow. The main difference is the blockage is only temporary. The symptoms of TIA is the same as a regular stroke.

Symptoms

If you are having a stroke, there are very evident symptoms. The fist symptom is the inability to speak properly. Your speech will become very slurred. You may also experience numbness and paralysis. One side of the body typically does not function properly, and your mouth may droop. The blood pressure will increase drastically, and you will have a headache. You may feel dizzy and confused. Walking will be extremely difficult, especially if you are feeling dizzy. The symptoms of a stroke are evident and life threatening.

Stroke md top10mdDiagnosis & Treatment

Once a stroke is diagnosed, you need immediate treatment. Aspirin is the first method of treatment. It minimizes the damage of a stroke. An injection is the next method of treatment. This drug is also good at getting rid of blood clots. Sometimes, surgery is necessary. A doctor may add a catheter to inject the medicine. If a blood clot is a problem, the doctor must remove it. If you have experienced an aneurysm, the vessel must be clipped to stop the rupture.

Strokes are extremely serious and can cause a lot of damage. If your brain loses too much oxygen, it will not function properly. If you notice any signs of a stroke, you should seek medical attention immediately. It is important to get treatment as soon as possible. Early treatment can save your life. Do not ignore your symptoms. Brain health is more important than anything.
