Unable to Maintain an Erection During Sex
Erectile dysfunction or impotence can come with a lot of fears, but learning how to better treat this condition either because it is a medical or emotional issue can help bring back that relational intimacy.
Why Does Erectile Dysfunction Occur?
Erectile dysfunction occurs when the penis is unable to develop or maintain an erection during sexual performance. On the flip side, erectile dysfunction can also include priapism, which is where the penis painfully maintains an erection for 4 or more hours. An erection occurs when blood flows into the penis and is held there within sponge-like cells, and often results from sexual arousal.
More commonly, this dysfunction occurs from diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hormonal insufficiencies and drug side effects. Psychologically, this may occur with feelings of inadequacy, and in this case, can be helped.
In a study in 2011, the Journal of Urology found that men who take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs 3 times a day for 3 months are 22% more likely to get erectile dysfunction.
Treating Erectile Dysfunction
- Oral Medications – Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (cAMP) and (cGMP)
- Topical Medication – Alprostadil (Vitaros)
- Penis Pump – Draws blood into the penis prior to sexual intercourse through applying negative pressure
- Injected Medication – Drugs injected into the penis as therapy can include: papaverine, phentolamine, and prostaglandin E1
- Alternative Medicine – Herbal Viagra or natural sexual enhancement products
- Surgery -This should be the last resort, and may be a prosthetic implant into the penis
Maintaining Intimacy With Erectile Dysfunction
Oftentimes, erectile dysfunction can cause barriers to sexual intimacy, but there are several ways to overcome them. Talking about your feelings can help you feel closer to your partners and break down mental barriers to further a healthy relationship. Couples are also brought closer together by sharing common interests and hobbies, or staying active together. Experimenting with different sexual techniques can bring pleasure even when they don’t involve intercourse. Lastly, talking with a sex counselor may be a great resort to help resolve intimacy struggles.
