Sleep Apnea

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common disorder where you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep.

These pauses can last for a couple seconds up to a minute. These frequent interruptions in breath prevent one from falling into deep sleep and thus they wake up and are excessively tired during the day. Oftentimes people who snore loudly and feel sleepy after a full night’s rest have sleep apnea.

Risks

Males, along with those who are overweight, and those who are over the age of 40 are at greater risk.

Cpap MachineDiagnosing

Sleep apnea can be diagnosed through a test called a polysomnogram. During this sleep study, a test is performed that electronically transmits and records physical activity while you sleep.

CPAP Therapy

CPAP also called, continuous positive airway pressure, uses a mask over the nose and mouth to deliver air into body. The mask itself is hooked up to an air machine. This causes continuous airflow into the body so breathing is kept regular. CPAP is considered to be one of the most effective treatments.

It is very important if you think you have sleep apnea to contact a doctor immediately, as this condition could affect the heart and cause other complications to your health. Most people don’t associate loud snoring with sleep problems, but oftentimes loud snoring, punctuated by silent pauses is a strong indicator.
