What is Ischemic Heart Disease?
If you have ischemic heart disease or coronary artery disease, the blood vessels that lead to your heart are narrowed or blocked by deposits of fatty acids and LDL cholesterol along your arterial walls; this weakens the heart because it has to work twice as hard to supply your body with oxygen and nutrients. In severe cases of ischemic heart disease, the deposits or plaque buildup can obstruct blood supply.
When the plaque deposits rupture, the plaque produces a chemical that causes the ruptured area to clot. The combination of narrowed arteries and blood clot is what causes a heart attack. Early stages of ischemic heart disease often go untreated because there are little or no symptoms. However, more severe cases can cause crushing chest pain often in conjunction with nausea, sweating and shortness of breath and alarming feelings.
