When To See A Doctor

If tendinitis seems severe, the tendon may be ruptured and you may need surgical repair.  But most of the time, tendinitis can be treated with physical therapy and medication.

The best way to know if you need to see your doctor is if your day to day activities are interrupted by the pain.

Causes and Treatment

Tendinitis usually happens slowly, over time, due to the repetition of a particular movement.  It can also come about merely through aging, as tendons lose elasticity.  It can also accompany anyone who has rheumatoid arthritis.

The main goal of treatment is to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.  A splint or brace may be used to help stabilize the area, as well as heat or cold application. Anti-inflammatory medication such as Aspirin or Ibuprofen may also help.

The most important aspect of recovery is physical therapy. This should be used to strengthen the muscles, while stretching them at the same time.  This can also help prevent future injury.
