After the first trimester, you are gaining weight weekly. When multiplies are involved, you will gain more weight than you would with just one child. If you are a calorie counter, you should be consuming about 3000 calories a day. To maintain our weight, most of us are consuming about 2000 calories a day. You may think since you are great you have to double your calorie count. That is not true at all. You only need a slight increase in your calorie count to keep you healthy.
Every woman carries their weight differently and in pregnancy, some people look like they have not gained any weight except in their belly. Weight distribution during pregnancy is a little different from the way women gain weight when they are not pregnant. That is why the scale may be increasing, but you do not physically look any heavier. Most of the weight you gain come from the baby. The baby ranges from about 6lbs to 8lbs on average. Another 5lbs to 9lbs of weight is the stored fat you need once you deliver. The store fat helps in breastfeeding. The other weight is distributed among the placenta, amniotic sac, and blood. The placenta and amniotic sac weigh about 2lbs to 3lbs each. The extra blood supply adds weight as well. There is an increase in breast tissue that is also preparing for breastfeeding. The uterus is spreading which also adds about 5lbs. As you see, the weight gain does not go to your hips and arms as it would normally. To gain weight healthily, guidelines must be followed.
Since you are pregnant, you may feel like you are supposed to eat more. You may eat more, but it should not be double of what you are already consuming. Eating way too much will cause you to gain much more weight than you should. Being overweight puts you at risk for other health-related conditions like diabetes and hypertension. The only reason you should be losing weight is if you are already overweight, and the doctor is putting you on a diet. Do not try to put yourself on a diet. The best ways to gain a healthy amount of weight is to eat six meals a day. The meals we are used to are huge. Three of these six meals include snacks. By eating snacks in between meals, you will eat smaller portions and keep your metabolism up. Your snacks should be healthy. Try to avoid the salty chips and twinkies. Try foods like peanut butter and apples or celery sticks. Eating non-fat dairy products will also help. Eating dairy, in general, adds a lot of fat to your body. Adding the non-fat dairy can give you calcium without adding extra fat.
Weight gain, especially for women, is not something you look forward to. When a child is involved, a mother will sacrifice almost anything, even that beach body. The good news is your weight gain does not necessarily make you look bigger, most of the weight is in the belly, where the child is developing.
