The first thing to know is what is a normal menstrual cycle. A normal menstrual period cycle lasts between 4-7 days, and occur every 21-35 days.  Anything different than this can be classified as abnormal menstruation.

Signs & Symptoms of Abnormal Periods

  • Missing 3 or more periods in a row
  • Much lighter or heavier menstruation
  • Periods that last longer than 7 days
  • Periods that occur less than 21 days apart or more than 35 days apart
  • Bleeding or spotting between periods

Types of Abnormal Periods

  • Amenorrhea –Amenorrhea is when a woman’s period stops altogether, and this excludes women who are pregnant or going through menopause. This usually includes girls who are 15-16 years old and have not started their period, or it includes girls who have not started their period three years after their breasts have begun to develop.
  • Oligomenorrhea – Oligomenorrhea is when a period occurs infrequently.
  • Dysomenorrhea – Dysomenorrhea is when a period is very painful and has severe menstrual cramps.

Causes of Abnormal Periods

  • Birth control pills
  • Stress
  • Endometriosis – tissue growing outside of the uterus
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Premature ovary failure

When To See A Doctor

  • Severe cramping pain during periods or between periods
  • Unusually heavy bleeding, soaking through menstrual pad or tampon in 2-3 hours
  • High fever
  • Foul smelling vaginal discharge
  • Nausea or vomiting during period
  • Bleeding or spotting between periods
  • Symptoms of toxic shock syndrome, fever above 102, diarrhea, vomiting

How To Treat Abnormal Menstruation

  • Regulating the menstrual cycle through use of hormones such as estrogen or progestin
  • Pain relievers such as ibuprofen or warm bath to relieve cramps
  • Uterine fibroids can be treated with ibuprofen or low dose birth control pills or surgical removal
