If your hair is thinning or you are experiencing a receding hairline it may be time for a hair transplant.
What Is a Hair Transplant?
Hair transplant is a procedure that involves moving hair from one area of the body to an area of the body that is balding. Primarily, this is used for male baldness, but it can be used on females too. This minimally invasive procedure uses hair follicles that are resistant to balding and transplanted through grafts to the balding area.

Hair Transplant Surgery
This procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis with mild sedation, and lasts about 6 hours. It is important for doctors to remove/ cut transplant tissue at the same angle that matches the growth of the hair in the area it is being transplanted to, in order to preserve a natural outcome. Hair grows in 1-4 follicular units, they are most often transplanted in these groupings.
Strip Excision Harvesting
This is the most popular form of hair transplant, where a small strip of hair is removed from another part of the body, with the help of microscopes, small follicular units of hair applied to the balding area. The application process involves tiny punctures being made where the hair follicles will be inserted and angled in the same direction as the other hair growth to create a natural look. This is a two-week recovery period with a pencil thin scar that can be covered by the existing hair.
Folicular Unit Extraction
Folicular unit extraction involves the removal of individual hair follicles at a micro level and inserting them in punctured openings at grafting site. This process is a little more time consuming, and can be done all at once, or in multiple sessions. Its main advantage is that there is no linear scar as there is in strip excision harvesting. The recovery is about 7 days, since no staples need to be removed.
- Change your dressings daily
- Shield the treated area from the sun
- Shampooing hair can begin two days after the surgery
- Shampooing is important to keep scabs from forming around the graft area
Shock Loss – all the transplanted hairs fall out about a week after surgery and 2-3 months later, new hair will have grown back in the transplanted area. Your new hair continues to thicken over the next 6-9 months.
