Health Conditions

Some health conditions outside of sleep disorders may cause you to feel tired and result in you sleeping more, whereas others may prevent sleep altogether. These conditions include:

Ways to Sleep Better

Sleep can be an art. There are methods for getting a better night’s rest. Some obvious methods include not eating right before bed or having caffeinated beverages. It may be in your best interest to stop caffeinated beverages early in the day as well. After 2 pm, you should cut out all caffeine. It may be good to stay away from scary movies as well before going to bed. Heightened fear and anxiety will inhibit sleep. Alcohol is not the best aid because it may lead you to be restless. Do not run from the gym straight to bed, wind down some before heading to bed. Relaxing before falling asleep helps your stress level to go down and tells your body it is time to rest. Regular exercise is excellent for you. Stretching is also very helpful. Time of day best for exercising depends on the individual. Regular exercise has been seen to resolve insomnia.

Your bedroom should be a relaxing place suitable for resting. If a clean, quiet, and dark room works best for you, then do not try to sleep with the TV on or sleep with clothes on the bed. Do what works for you. Some people need a night light and soft music. Naps may be a ritual for you, but it can hinder a good night’s rest. Naps that last too long will end up keeping you awake all night. Contrary to popular belief, bathing right before bed may not be a good idea either. A bath or shower raises your body temperature and causes you to feel more awake. A bath should be taken maybe before dinner or a few hours before bedtime.

Remedies

If you have trouble sleeping, there are remedies. They may be natural, or medication can be used as well.

Natural Remedies:

Medications

Sleep is a part of life. Without it, your health can diminish, but too much sleep can also diminish health. Everything has to be in moderation. Figure out what works best for you to have a good night’s sleep. If you sleep well and wake up refreshed, don’t do anything different. As the saying goes, if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. If you are having difficulty falling asleep, figure out other methods to help you fall asleep. Assess your lifestyle and rid yourself of any bad habits that could be hindering sleep. If you notice that you are getting the proper amount of sleep at night, and still exhausted when waking up, it could mean you have other health conditions. Most doctors will recommend a blood test to make sure all your vitamin levels are normal. If those are fine, a sleep study may be done. The study will monitor disruptions during sleep. You may have sleep apnea (disruptive breathing during sleep), or you may even sleepwalk. Be conscious of your sleep patterns and make sure you are getting enough sleep so you can live a longer, more beautiful life.
