Cosmetic nasal surgery, technically known as rhinoplasty, is a popular cosmetic surgery not only used for cosmetic reasons but also to help improve function. The nose is a dominant part of the face, and when it does not look the way you may desire it to, it can affect your self-esteem. Rhinoplasty is performed for many different reasons. The surgery is quick and may not even require a hospital stay. Recovery takes time, but the result can make it all worth it.
Rhinoplasty may be done under either local or general anesthesia. If local anesthesia is used, you will still be awake, but the nose will be numb. The type of anesthesia used is dependent upon your preference. The method of surgery is dependent upon your reasons for your surgery. If you need a cartilage graft, or you are having the tip of the nose operated on, the incision is made on the outside of the nose. In most other cases, the incision is made on the inside of the nose.
Cosmetic nasal surgery can fix many different problems. The problems may be either cosmetic or related to breathing issues. Common reasons for rhinoplasty include:
- Nose size
- Nose profile
- Bridge width
- Deviated septum
- Enlarged nostrils
- Nasal tip problems
- Injury or birth defects
- Asymmetry of the nose
Cosmetic Nasal Surgery
Before having cosmetic nasal surgery, an appointment with a cosmetic surgeon is necessary. A surgeon must analyze whether or not your desires are realistic. Some people have unrealistic expectations. A smaller nose has become a trend. The problem is that your nose can only be so small. The doctor can only cut out so much cartilage before it leads to breathing problems. Even in fixing the nostrils, the doctor is limited to how small they can make the nostrils. You still need to be able to breathe. There are limitations with all cosmetic surgery. If the physician feels that your desires are not attainable, they may not perform surgery at all.
The nose is an important part of breathing. If you are having trouble breathing, rhinoplasty may be needed. Cosmetic nasal surgery is necessary for those who have birth defects or problems like a deviated septum. Some nasal birth defects cause complete or partial blockage in one or both sides of the nose. A cleft lip and cleft palate not only requires rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons but also for breathing reasons. A deviated septum is not always fixed at birth. Many people do not fix this problem until adulthood. A deviated septum is a condition in which the septum that divides the nose is shifted too far to the left or the right of the nose. Anytime there is an injury that affects the nose; surgery may be needed. Some injuries leave the nose permanently deformed. Not all injuries require surgery, but many people may want surgery to fix a cosmetic issue.
Post-Op Care for Rhinoplasty
Recovery can be a trying process. Once the bandages are removed, you will see some subtle changes, but do not be alarmed if your nose looks worse than it did before. Bandages are usually taken off between 3-5 days after surgery. You will still notice a lot of swelling and bruising. The swelling takes some time to go down and bruising resolves with time. You will experience both pain and numbness. It takes several weeks for a full recovery. Once recovery is completed, you should see the results you expected. In the case of breathing issues, you should be able to breathe much better, and it may also cut down on snoring problems.
Rhinoplasty or cosmetic nasal surgery can be a benefit to you in both cosmetic and anatomical ways. Not everyone is in need of cosmetic nasal surgery. Some people are not even eligible for cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery should bring good not harm. Overdoing nasal cosmetic surgery can leave you with harmful effects. It may result in breathing issues and lead to snoring. The anatomy of the nose is critical. If the nose is not properly structured, it will lead to breathing issues. In these cases, rhinoplasty is required. Breathing is imperative, and any issues that affect breathing should be fixed.
You may be under the assumption that cosmetic surgery is vain. In most cases the purpose of cosmetic surgery is not strictly cosmetic but to fix real problems. Those who choose to undergo nasal surgery for cosmetic reasons may deal with real self-esteem issues. Being picked on for your nose being too big or seeing that your nose is asymmetrical can be bothersome. If you have cosmetic problems with your nose, do not be ashamed to speak with a cosmetic surgeon. The problems you may have may be an easy fix. You do not have to go through life not liking the way you look or not being able to breathe. If you have real concerns, make an appointment with a cosmetic surgeon. It can be one of the best decisions you make.
