Diarrhea is the lack of water absorption in the intestine which leads to a watery stool that has you running to the bathroom. The stool is not supposed to be too watery or too hard. Diarrhea can be triggered by a number of different things. It is not usually serious or dangerous but when it last too long it can be extremely dangerous and may require an office visit. Diarrhea may also result from eating things that upset our stomach. If you are lactose intolerant, you may have diarrhea from eating too much dairy. Spicy food may also cause diarrhea. The spices can mess up the function of the intestine. Sometimes diarrhea is a result of an allergic reaction. Certain medications have side effects like diarrhea. Drinking too much alcohol affects digestion and affects water absorption. Taking laxatives may be good for constipation, but overusing laxatives can cause you to have diarrhea. Running may also lead to diarrhea. Some runners have this problem which makes it difficult for them to do what they love.
Diarrhea is not fun, but it can be treated. Pepto-Bismol and Imodium are two of the most commonly used medications to treat diarrhea. It helps the intestine absorb water and makes the stool harder. You have to be careful with taking too much of these over-the-counter medications. It can end up causing constipation. There are times when diarrhea irritates the anus and causes soreness. Sometimes it is best to sit in a nice tub of warm water to soothe the irritation. Creams are also good for soothing the pain and soreness. Sometimes that area will become raw so keeping it moist helps. Hydration is most important.
Hospital visits due to diarrhea are because of dehydration. When all the water in the body is running out of you, your cells don’t have enough water which has serious consequences. Sometimes when you have diarrhea, you are also suffering from vomiting. When you even attempt to digest water, it may come back up immediately. After about a day, you should see a physician. You may need an IV to replenish the water you are losing. Sometimes just that restoration of water in the system makes you feel a whole lot better.
Diarrhea happens to the best of us. It is not something that is uncommo n. Some people get diarrhea more than others and if you have certain medical conditions you are not foreign to the problem. Although diarrhea is annoying and uncomfortable, do not worry about it too much. Normally after a few days, your body will go back to normal. If you are having trouble retaining water and feeling very fatigue, you may need to see a doctor. Anytime you see blood in the stool and also have a fever, you may have a more serious condition.
