In today’s image-focused society, the term, “Mommy Makeover” is used a lot, but who knows exactly what that means? Dr. John Burns, Dallas plastic surgeon, helps familiarizes us with this term and also explains what this includes in the plastic surgery arena. A mommy makeover is a term describing various plastic surgery procedures designed to address changes in the post-pregnancy body, which includes: breasts, abdomen, love handles, hips, and thighs. Any combination of procedures, such as breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, or liposuction can be referred to as a mommy makeover.
With pregnancy, the breasts will enlarge during lactation, and after breastfeeding, will shrink to a smaller size. In addition, the breast skin, which stretches to accommodate the larger breast, will not contract. This ends up leaving the breasts both flat and saggy. By restoring needed volume to the breast, with a breast implant, simple breast augmentation can restore the appearance of the breast. In more severe cases, a breast lift or an augmentation combined with a breast lift may be necessary to restore the breast shape and size.
During pregnancy, the abdominal skin and muscles can become stretched beyond their ability to recoil. The skin and fat below the belly button and above the pubic area can be removed with a tummy tuck. The abdominal muscles can also be tightened to narrow the waist and give a more hourglass body shape.
Finally, liposuction can be used to remove unwanted fat from the love handles, hips, and thighs to sculpt and contour the body.
