What Is An Age Spot?
Age spots are flat spots that vary in color and size. Sometimes they appear brown, black, or even gray in color. You may have heard the term by other names, such as “liver spots” or “sun spots.” Age spots are a result of excess skin pigmentation and tend to occur on areas of the body where there is more exposure to the sun – your face, hands, shoulders, and forearms.
Am I At Risk For Age Spots?
Anyone can develop age spots. However, you will find certain people are more susceptible to them depending on a few factors:
- 40+ Years of Age
- Fair Skin
- Frequent exposure to the sun
- Frequent tanning bed use
How Do I Know If It’s An Age Spot?
In good lighting, thoroughly examine your skin for any discoloration. Check for darker spots that are brown or black in color. As you run your fingers over the spots, they will feel flat and be the same texture as the rest of your skin. You should be able to press on the spots with no risk of pain or discomfort. If you do experience pain, however, check with your board-certified dermatologist for a proper examination.
Can Age Spots Be Treated?
Luckily, age spots are not dangerous and do not cause any health issues. If you are unhappy with the way they look, you may have them removed by your board certified dermatologist. Your options range from prescription chemical peels to lasers can zap them and they will fall off within a week. Bleaching creams you buy over the counter may lighten them but they will reappear. Depending on your case, your dermatologist will guide you in the appropriate direction. Over-the-counter creams are not as strong as prescription level creams. They may or may not change in the pigmentation of your skin. If you are looking to try something over the counter before scheduling an appointment, look for creams with ingredients containing hydroquinone, deoxyarbutin, glycolic acid, alpha hydroxy acid, or kojic acid or save your money and have them zapped!
